Prof. Oestmann is Professor of Radiology at the Charité Berlin, which is the collective medical school of the Humboldt-University and the Free University of Berlin.
He takes care of his personal patients within the premises of the Armed Forces Hospital / Bundeswehrkrankenhaus Berlin, where he also serves as reserve lieutenant colonel (medical corps).
He studied at the Hannover Medical School. There he also completed his training as a radiologist. He took a two year sabbatical to work at the Massachussetts General Hospital of the Harvard Medical School in Boston / USA. During that time he also directed research projects with Toshiba and American Science and Engineering. After his boards he accepted a position at the hospital of the Dutch Imperial University in Leiden. There he also directed a breast cancer research project with Delft Instruments. In 1993 he accepted a clinical professorship at the Georg-August-University in Göttingen. In 1999 he moved to Berlin to work at the Charité. He became clinical director of a research project on ultrasound therapy of uterine fibroids with Insightec. Besides his clinical work he directed a large e-learning project for medical teaching: SYMPOL. He now continues these acivities within A1-med, a typical spin-off enterprise.
Professor Oestmann is member of the thesis committee of the Charité. He has been examiner for radiology boards for years.
